The winners of this year’s
Young Photographer Competition
- a ‘free to enter’, Dacorum-wide event for young people between the
ages of 7 and 17.
The theme this year was ‘The Beauty of Architecture’ and the many
entries were of a very high standard. They were judged in three entry
categories based upon age and the winners are :
Junior Mouna Shan
Intermediate Josh Clarke
Senior Sam Power
The three winners have been awarded prizes of £100 and an engraved
plate; all entrants receive a Certificate of achievement as a Winner,
Highly Commended, Commended or Participant.
The winners were entered into the District (Herts/Beds/Bucks) heat.
Two became District Winners in their age groups (Mouna and Josh) and
go on to National Finals. Sam came Second in theirs.
You do not need a clever camera to enter - mobile phones and tablets
will work successfully too. Rotary have run this popular competition
for many years. It is a lot of fun so why not join in next year?

Dacorum Young Artists Competition, now in its 9th year, is
open to Year 4 & 5 students in Dacorum Borough and featured work
from 22 schools this year. Usually there is no set theme for the
competition and the work exhibited represents material created over
the course of the school year.
There were a record 663 entrants this year and all their entries
were displayed at Ashlyns School on 29
th
April. The judges chose
one entry from each of the 22 schools as ‘Best in School’.

Santa Visits Berkhamsted 2022
During the month of December Rotary start their festivities with the Elves Posting House at the Berkhamsted Festival of Light. Children write their letters to Father Christmas at the posting house. This year 370 children popped in to see Mrs Claus. All funds raised were donated to the Swan Youth Project. It’s then time for Santa to start his visits around the residential streets of the town. 19 local charities and organisations supported us this year to collect each night during December. Despite rain, frost,snow and ice and thanks to the generosity of our town we raised £13,672 which was split out to all the groups that supported us.
2023 Civic Awards
At Berkhamsted Town Council’s open meeting on 2nd March, our President Paul Dubbins announced the 2023 Rotary Centenary Civic Awards. The Senior Award was given to Christopher Talbot-Ponsonby of the Berkhamsted Citizens Association and two Junior awards to Imogen Jaques of the Swan Youth Project and Eva May Woods of West Herts Scout District. President Paul recognised the wonderful contribution that all three awardees make to our community, through their selfless and tireless commitment of time, energy and compassion. here to read Paul’s address to Christopher, Imogen and Eva May.

Martin started his campaign in the Men’s Singles WH2 Group Play Stage - Group B, defeating Dumnern Junthong of Thailand.
He then came 2nd in his Group but was unfortunately knocked out by Chan Ho Yuen of HK in the quarterfinals
Over the last 5 years Berkhamsted Rotary has helped towards self-funding Potten End resident Martin’s expenses and helping
him realise his dream of representing his country at the Tokyo Paralympics. We have written to him to congratulate him on all
his hard work and determination which earned him a quarterfinal place.
Martin replied: ‘Yes , I’m always disappointed whenever I lose a game. More so when it’s at the biggest tournament of my life. However
eight weeks ago, I was 95% sure I wouldn’t make it to the Paralympics due to injury. I
couldn’t hit the shuttle hard. I was in so much pain. I travelled to Leeds , Manchester to
see specialist after specialist. I had Cortizone injections into the elbow that were
unsuccessful. With constant physio, rehab and huge desire, I managed somehow to turn it
around. That alone was a monumental achievement.
The Paralympics itself has been and unforgettable experience. I’ve played against the best
players in the world on the biggest stage in the world.
I can’t thank Rotary enough. I’m extremely grateful for your constant support throughout
my incredible journey.’

The
Rotary
Centenary
Civic
Awards
were
instituted
in
2004
when
Rotary
celebrated
its
Centenary.
At
that
time
Berkhamsted
Town
Council
also
wanted
to
introduce
an
Annual
Civic
Award
to
recognise
the
work
of
those
unsung
heroes
in
our
community
who
contribute
so
much to our civic life – so we came together to set up these joint awards.
There
are
two
Awards
–
one
made
to
an
adult
and
one
to
a
young
person
of
18
years
or
under.
The
first
award
Award
was
made
in
2005.
Winners
names
are
engraved
on
the
shields
which are displayed on the wall of the Council Chamber in the Civic Centre.
This
year
we
are
recognising
JOAN
FISHER
with
the
Senior
Award,
but
because
of
the
interruptions
to
so
many
youth
activities
in
the
last
year,
a
Junior
Award
is
not
being
made.
Joan
has
made
outstanding
contributions
which
have
benefitted
many
people
in
our
Town.
Veterans Visit to National Memorial Arboretum -
7th September 2021.
The Rotary clubs of Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead jointly organized a trip for veterans to visit the NMA (National Memorial Arboretum). After several postponements due to COVID-19 this went ahead in September. 37 veterans signed up for the trip including a 98 year-old RAF aircraft crew, a 97 year-old Royal Marine, a 91 year-old Paratrooper and several WRAC ladies whose ages shall not be revealed.
Rotary Seniors Out trip to Waterperry Gardens 14th
September 2022
The Rotary Club of Berkhamsted with help from the Happy Wanderers, which is a local group that provide help for senior citizens, organised this years outing for senior citizens. This year the visit was to Waterperry Gardens. A Party of 32 Senior citizens, helpers and carers, as well as Rotarian and Inner Wheel helpers travelled by coach to the gardens. The coach left from Berkhamsted Sports Centre at 1pm. Waterperry Gardens were made famous by Beatrix Havergal who established her School of Horticulture for Ladies here from 1932 to 1971. It is now home to 8 acres of beautifully landscaped ornamental gardens, with a plant centre and garden shop, a gallery and gift shop, and a museum and tea shop. The day was helped by exceptionally warm and sunny weather throughout the afternoon. After exploring the beautiful gardens, we congregated in the Tea Rooms for a welcome “Cream Tea”. We departed from Waterperry at 4.40pm and after the coach driver managed to avoid numerous road closures, we arrived back in Berkhamsted. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

Berkhamsted Rotary is founded on 80 years of Rotary activity in the town. We are a group of individuals from many walks of life and, with 54 members, we are one of the largest Rotary clubs in Beds, Bucks and Herts. We use our time and energy to support young people and to improve the lives of the elderly, vulnerable and disadvantaged both here and overseas. We organise charity events (such as our Half Marathon and Fireworks Night) to raise funds. Charitable causes are supported via the Berkhamsted Rotary Trust Fund CIO which is a UK Registered Charity No. 1182564. This year we are donating some £42,000 to support many worthwhile causes both at home and overseas. We work as a team and have a good time in the process. Friendships are developed through our club activities and also social events such as our monthly and annual walks. We normally meet for dinner each Tuesday, usually at Berkhamsted Town Hall in the centre of Berkhamsted, at 7:30 for 8:00 pm.Our 2022/2023 President, Paul Dubbins, explains how he became a Rotarian and what it
means to him.
This story is becoming a bit of an old aphorism. Move to Berkhamsted, seek out Rotary, find friends. We have been in Berkhamsted for only 6 years and I have been a member of the Rotary Club just over 4 of those. I had always thought that Rotary was a dining club for old men and it is true that a number of us have been around the block a few times…but a dining club..not really. The club is seeing an ever more diverse membership and exploiting the wider reach of social media to deliver our message, although perhaps not yet ready for TikTok! I have been amazed by the contribution the club makes to life within Berkhamsted; from the Fireworks to the Half Marathon, the Outdoor Concert to Santa’s sleigh, working with local schools to promote art, photography and public speaking, as well as working with local charities. We raise quite a lot of money for local, national and international charities, and you could ask why we do this? Altruism, a bit; “giving back” a hackneyed phrase but I guess so; but I think most of all it is to be involved with a group of people who really enjoy working with each other and sharing our enthusiasm with the whole of the community Berkhamsted is a great place, and, I think, all the better for the efforts of Rotary.…and yes, I have made new friends. I am honoured to serve as President for this year and look forward to meeting some of you at one or other of our many events

working people
with family and
work commitments
... so our members
ensure that family
and work come first
by attending
whatever meetings
work for them.
We work with local
schools to organise
challenging
competitions for
students and
provide days out
for the elderly and
for disadvantaged
young people. We
organise events to
raise money for
local and overseas
charities.

Volunteering Work with Rotary Changes Lives
Fund raising is, of course, an important part of our activities but equally helping implement community projects, such as running outings for the elderly and disabled or ferrying folk to visit family members in hospital is also what we do. Each year Berkhamsted Rotary manages lots of these community projects - and although we have 60 members, we still need the help of all those lovely people who come along and help us. As an example, on the day of our Half Marathon and Fun Run we need a team of some 200 stewards and marshals to ensure the safety of competitors and the general public; we can't do this on our own! So if you feel that you'd like to help out or if you have a special skill that might be of benefit to the community, please get in touch with us and maybe we can work out how you might volunteer in a way which suits your particular circumstances. Why sponsors and supporters are important
Nearly every community and fund raising event that we organise has associated costs; for instance the costs of putting on our
Annual Fireworks display for the town typically exceeds £10,000. Even putting on on our annual Technology Tournament for young
students costs in excess of £1000.
In recent years year our charity Trust Fund has typically managed to generate an annual net income of more than £40,000 which is
then disbursed as donations to various charitable causes. We could not, however, achieve this without the generous support of
sponsors ... both those who provide financial support and also those who support us in kind by providing essential services free of
charge. You can see our annual report to the Charity Commission here.

Why sponsors and supporters are important
Nearly every community and fund raising event that we organise has
associated costs; for instance the costs of putting on our Annual
Fireworks display for the town typically exceeds £10,000. Even putting
on on our annual Technology Tournament for young students costs
in excess of £1000.
In recent years year our charity Trust Fund has typically managed to
generate an annual net income of more than £40,000 which is then
disbursed as donations to various charitable causes. We could not,
however, achieve this without the generous support of sponsors ...
both those who provide financial support and also those who
support us in kind by providing essential services free of charge. You
